Cell Phone Policy
I.S. 230 CELL PHONE AND ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As the school year begins, I wanted to inform families and guardians about the IS230 cell phone policy. We want to thank you for your support in helping to prepare your child for success! We look forward to working with you and your child for an improved and successful school year.
No Cell Phone School ● All devices must be turned off at all times in school and put away in their book bag or pocket prior to entering the building. ● Students may NOT use or HAVE THEIR DEVICE SEEN OR HEARD ● Any students found to be using a cell phone/computing/personal technology device at any time will have the device confiscated. |
The No Cell Phone Policy is important for the following reasons:
- Cell phones can be a distraction from learning. They may not be turned on or used in school. (Chancellor’s Regulation A-413).
- Cell phones may lead to cyberbullying or negative interactions that can take away from positive community building in our school (Chancellor’s Regulation A-832).
- Cell phones could be used for academic dishonesty which is prohibited by the NYC Dept. of Education. This does not allow for an accurate understanding of students’ academic strengths and needs.
Question and Answer
Question: What do I do if I need to contact my child in case of an emergency?
Answer: Please call the school number, 718-335-7648 (main) 718-565-4560 (annex), and we will get the message to your child.
Question: What happens if my child uses a cell phone in school?
Answer: If your child does not follow the NO CELL PHONE rule, these are the consequences.
- 1st offense - phone will be taken but returned to student after dismissal.
- 2nd offense- parent will be called, phone will be taken but returned to student after dismissal.
- 3rd offense & subsequent offenses - phone will be taken away & parent/guardian will need to pick up the phone at school.
Thank you in advance for your support and understanding.
